Description
Dighton Rock research. 18th-century artworks comparing the Dighton Rock inscription (top) and a Siberian inscription (bottom). The Dighton Rock was a 40-ton boulder found in the riverbed of the Taunton River at what is now Berkley, Massachusetts, USA. Speculation about the origins of the petroglyphs range from indigenous North Americans to peoples from Europe and Asia. Here, a copy made by US orientalist Stephen Sewell (1734-1804) in 1768 is compared to a Siberian inscription described by Swedish geographer Philip Johan von Strahlenberg (1676-1747). Published in Volume 8 (1787) of 'Archaeologia', the journal of the Society of Antiquaries of London.
